フシギダネ（英:Bulbasaur）は、ポケットモンスターシリーズに登場する架空の生物ポケットモンスター（ポケモン）の一種である。にしだあつこによってデザインされ、ポケモンゲームシリーズの初代『ポケットモンスター赤・緑』で「御三家^{[注 1]}」として初めて登場した。それ以降、続編やスピンオフゲーム、関連商品、フランチャイズのアニメ作品や出版物に登場してきた。アニメシリーズ『ポケットモンスター』でも中心的なキャラクターとして登場し、初シーズンではサトシのメインポケモンの一匹であった。また漫画作品でも重要な役割を演じており『ポケットモンスターSPECIAL』では主人公であるレッドが所有していた。

フシギダネは一般に好意的に受け止められており、『赤・緑』時代から強い人気を得ている^[1]。アニメでのポジションがその人気の要因になったとも考えられている。

発案と構想

フシギダネはポケモンフランチャイズのために制作された架空のポケモンの一種である。ゲームフリークによって開発され任天堂によって公開されたそのシリーズは、ゲームボーイのビデオゲーム『ポケットモンスター赤・緑』のリリースとともに1996年の日本で始まった^[2]。このゲームではプレイヤーはポケモンと呼ばれる生物を捕まえ育成するトレーナーとなった^[3]。プレイヤーはポケモンたちの特殊能力を使って他のポケモンと戦い、より強い種に「進化」させることもできた^[3]。

フシギダネはプレイヤーがゲームの冒頭で最初のポケモンとして3匹のなかから選ぶことのできる御三家として、1996年リリースの『赤・緑』で初めて登場した^[4]。「フシギダネ」という日本語名は日本語で謎や奇跡を意味する「不思議（ふしぎ）」と「種（たね）」を組み合わせている^[5]。英語にゲームを訳す際、任天堂はポケモン名を、アメリカ人の子どもたちがより親しみやすいようにその外見や特徴に関連付けた「巧みで説明的なもの」にした^[6]。フシギダネはその恐竜（dinosaur）のような見た目と背中にくっついたニンニクの形をした大きな球根（bulb）からかばん語として英語名を「Bulbasaur」とした^[6]。フシギダネはフシギソウ（英:Ivysaur）に、フシギソウはフシギバナ（英:Venusaur）に「進化」する^[7]。その名と3種の外見から、「進化」するにつれてより危険になっていくことがわかる^[8]。フシギダネは『赤・緑』のキャラクターデザインを担当したにしだあつこによってデザインされ、にしだはこのとき最終形態からデザインを始めたと語っている^[9]。

ニンテンドー3DS向けゲーム『ポケットモンスター X・Y』に重要な役割でフシギダネおよび『赤・緑』のほかの御三家（すなわちヒトカゲとゼニガメ）を登場させるという構想が、『X・Y』の開発開始後およそ1年半が経ったころ生まれた^[10]。その3種の最終形態の「メガシンカ」形が生み出され、ゲーム設計者は同ゲーム内でプラターヌ博士からそれらのポケモンのうち一匹を受け取る機会をプレイヤーに与えることを決めた^[11]。

英語名は恐竜に関連して名付けられたが、ポケモンのデザイナー杉森建はフシギダネのデザインと「進化」がカエルをベースにしていると明らかにした^[12]。背中の種は生誕時に植えられ、その後発芽しそれとともに成長する^[13]。その球根は太陽光を吸収して育つ^[14]。エネルギーが球根内に蓄えられるため食べずしても何日も生き残ることができる^[15]。ゲームにおいて強さと弱点を決定する属性（タイプ）について、フシギダネは「くさ」と「どく」の2つを持っている^[16]。シリーズのプロデューサーでディレクターの増田順一はフシギダネがモンスターと植物の掛け合わせであることを挙げて、「ポケモンらしいポケモン」すなわちポケモンとは何かを体現していると評した^[17]。フシギダネの声は日本語（原語）アニメ、映画では林原めぐみが^[18]^[19]、英語版アニメシリーズではタラ・サンズ（英語版）およびミシェル・ノッツ（英語版）が務めた^[20]^[21]。

登場

フシギダネはポケモン図鑑において最初のポケモンである^[22]。『赤・緑』でそのデビューを飾った^[23]。ゼニガメおよびヒトカゲとともに、プレイヤーはゲームの冒頭でその3種から最初のポケモンを選ぶことができる^[23]。『赤・緑』のフシギダネ、ゼニガメ、ヒトカゲは『ポケットモンスター黄』ではピカチュウに取って代わられ、他の場所で入手できるようになっていた^[23]。フシギダネは以後主要なゲームシリーズのすべてに登場してきたが、『ポケットモンスターソード・シールド』では登場せず、同ゲームの追加コンテンツ「鎧の孤島」で利用できるようになった^[24]。同様に、『ポケットモンスタースカーレット・バイオレット』でも追加コンテンツ「ゼロの秘宝」が配信されるまでフシギダネは利用できなかった^[25]。

また、フシギダネはポケモンスタジアムやポケモン不思議のダンジョンシリーズといった様々なスピンオフ作品にも登場し、『ポケモン不思議のダンジョン救助隊DX』では性格診断クイズでプレイヤーがフシギダネに割り当てられることもある^[26]^[27]。『ポケモンスナップ』や『New ポケモンスナップ』ではフシギダネと写真を撮ることができる^[28]^[29]。2016年配信開始の『Pokémon GO』に^[30]^[31]^[32]、2021年発売の『Pokémon UNITE』ではプレイアブルポケモンであるフシギバナの前身形態として登場する^[33]。ポケモンのビデオゲーム以外にも、大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズシリーズではフィギィアとして登場した^[34]。『スーパーマリオメーカー』では「キャラマリオ」にフシギダネが追加されている^[35]^[36]。

ポケモンアニメではシリーズの主人公サトシなど、主要なキャラクターがフシギダネを所有していた^[1]。第2シリーズ『ポケットモンスターアドバンスジェネレーション』ではハルカがフシギダネを捕まえる^[37]。ハルカの後のゲスト出演で、この捕まえたフシギダネがフシギバナに「進化」していたことが明かされた^[38]。『赤・緑』のプロットに基づいた『ポケットモンスターSPECIAL』では主人公のレッドがオーキド博士からフシギダネを受け取る^[39]。映画『名探偵ピカチュウ』ではフシギダネが群れとなって登場した^[40]。この映画の制作では、フシギダネの頭でっかちな動きを理解するためにブルドッグを使用し、フシギダネの3Dパペットを作るためにロンドンの操り人形使いたちが雇われた^[41]。表情や細かい質感の表現にはComputer Generated Imageryが使用された^[41]。

プロモーションと受容

プロモーション

フシギダネのおもちゃやぬいぐるみなどのグッズがこれまで展開されてきた^[42]。アメリカのハズブロがアクションフィギュア、日本のタカラトミーはビニル製の人形やモデルキットなどを発売した^[43]。マクドナルドやバーガーキングといったファストフードチェーンでも玩具が展開された^[44]^[45]^[46]。

フシギダネは全日本空輸による様々なポケモンジェットのラッピングに登場している^[47]。日本ではまた、2020年8月に東京都町田市にフシギダネがデザインされた「ポケふた」が登場した^[48]。2021年には、セイコーがフシギダネとその「進化」形態（フシギソウ、フシギバナ）をデザインした限定版高級腕時計を製作した^[49]。南太平洋の島国ニウエは裏面にフシギダネがデザインされた1クラウンの法定通貨価値の記念硬貨を発行した^[50]。2014年のFIFAワールドカップでは日本のマスコットとして選ばれた11種のポケモンのうちの1体だった^[51]^[52]^[53]。2018年3月25日にはブラジルのサンパウロ州スザノ市にフシギダネの像が建てられた^[54]。

受容

フシギダネはヒトカゲやゼニガメよりかは人気が薄いと指摘されてきた^[55]。Nerdist（英語版）はこれを、日本国外での『赤・緑』リリースの際、箱絵からフシギバナが省略されたためシリーズ初期に注目が少なかったからであると説明している^[56]。あるツイッターユーザーは、フシギダネへの支持を集めるため「BulbaGanda」というアカウントを作り、かなりの人気を得ていた^[57]。

フシギダネはIGNや『Official Nintendo Magazine（英語版）』といった出版物から賞賛の言葉を受けた^[58]^[59]。ビデオゲームウェブサイト「Polygon」のクリス・プラントはフシギダネを「ベストポケモン」と呼んだ^[17]。クリスは他のポケモンと比較してフシギダネの「進化」先が、より「革のようで年を重ねた」ように見えるため、その進化の過程が最も現実的であるとも評した^[17]。他のPolygonのライターはそれだけでなく、可愛さを保ちながらデザイン要素のよいバランスが取れていると強調した^[60]。さらに別のライターは人々の年齢がフシギダネへの受け止めに影響を与えるようだと指摘し、若年層は弱弱しく、より年を取った人は可愛くて魅力的な生き物だととらえる傾向があるという^[61]。また、フシギダネはITmediaが行った日本のポケモンファンの間での人気投票で、御三家ポケモンの中で3位にランクインした^[1]。ITmediaはフシギダネの人気がアニメからきているとし、特にサトシのフシギダネはピカチュウを除いてサトシと最も長い期間一緒にいたポケモンであり、その期間が4年半に及んだことを挙げた^[1]。
