ジェフリー・アングルス (Jeffry Angles, 1971年7月10日 - ) は、アメリカ合衆国出身の詩人。第二言語の日本語で自由詩を執筆している。日本近代文学の研究者でもあり、日本の近現代詩および小説を英語に翻訳する翻訳家でもある。また、西ミシガン大学では日本語と日本文学を教えている。

経歴

オハイオ州コロンバスに生まれる。15歳の時に高校の交換留学生として初めて来日し、山口県下関市を訪れた。これが契機となり、その後は埼玉、京都、神戸など日本各地に住んだ[1]。

オハイオ州立大学大学院で日本文学を学んでいた1990年代の中ごろから、日本の短編小説や詩を翻訳し、アメリカ、日本、カナダ、オーストラリアの様々な文芸雑誌に寄稿し始めた[2]。翻訳に対しては使命感を抱いており、「翻訳がなければ我々は自分の文化に囚われてしまい、その他の世界の広大な知に触れることができない。文学作品を翻訳をすることで、文字通り何百万人の人たちが世界の遺産に触れることを可能にするのだ」と述べている[3]。

2004年に博士号を取得。テーマは村山槐多と江戸川乱歩の作品における、男性同性愛的エロティシズムの表象についてであった。これは2011年にミネソタ大学から出版された " Writing the Love of Boys " の下敷きとなっているが、同著では稲垣足穂と岩田準一についての新たな研究が追加されており、20世紀初頭の日本社会が、同性愛を病理学的逸脱とみなした西洋の精神医学に影響を受けたことが示されている。しかしこのような記述は多くの反論を受けており、事実はむしろ逆で、同性愛は昔から数多く日本に存在し、力強く豊かな、ともすれば美しいものであったという指摘がされている。アングルスは小説、詩、随筆、日記、絵画およびその他の視覚的な作品を引き合いに、上述の作家たちと、西洋で活躍した初期の同性愛者の作家たち（エドワード・カーペンター、ジョン・アディントン・シモンズ、ウォルト・ウィットマンら）から彼らが得たインスピレーションの関係を考察した。また、同著の結尾では、現在のBL漫画が村山槐多や稲垣足穂、江戸川乱歩といった数十年前の作家たちの思想を受け継ぎ、それらの上に成立したものであることについても論じている[4]。

この他にも、1920年代から1930年代にかけての日本の大衆文化や、日本の現代詩、日本の翻訳史についても研究している[2][5]。

また、溝口健二による1954年の映画『山椒大夫』の英語版がクライテリオン・コレクションにより販売された際、音声チャンネル上での解説を務めた[6]。

受賞歴

2009年、多田智満子の詩集『森の世界爺』を翻訳した "Forest of Eyes" により、 コロンビア大学のドナルド・キーン・センター・オブ・ジャパニーズ・カルチャー からThe Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature を受賞[7]。同著は2011年にも the Academy of American Poets より the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award を 受賞している[8]。また、伊藤比呂美の詩集『カノコ殺し』の英語版翻訳として2009年にAction Books から出版された "Killing Kanoko" は Three Percent が主催する Best Translated Book Award において詩の部門の最終選考作となった[9]。2013年には、ゲイの作家高橋睦郎による戦争体験記『十二の遠景』を翻訳した　”Twelve Views from the Distance” が Lambda Literary Award (memoir category) の最終選考作となった。

また、アングルスは the National Endowment for the Arts より助成金を獲得している[10]。2008年には高橋睦郎の回想録の翻訳により PEN Translation Fund Grant from PEN American Center を獲得している。

同じく2008年には、ワシントンD.C.のケネディ・センターに招聘され、伊藤比呂美、多和田葉子、高橋アキらとともに文学イベント Japan: Culture+Hyperculture Festival に参加した[11]。また、 J. Thomas Rimer と共同編集した日本の短編集 Japan: A Traveler's Literary Companion に関してナショナル・パブリック・ラジオの All Things Considered からインタビューを受けている[12]。

2009年から2010年にかけてアングルスは国際日本文化研究センターの客員研究員を務め、日本で行われた翻訳の歴史についての調査グループを組織した[5]。2011年には、東京大学駒場キャンパスで客員教授を務め比較文学を担当した。

2017年には、日本語で執筆した詩である『わたしの日付変更線 ( "My International Date Line" ) 』にて、第68回読売文学賞（詩歌俳句賞）を受賞。2月17日に東京で授賞式が開かれた。アングルスのような日本語を第一言語としない作家の受賞は珍しく、詩の部門においては初めてであった[13]。

In 2009, Angles received the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature, administered by the Donald Keene Center for Japanese Studies at Columbia University for his translation of Forest of Eyes: Selected Poems of Chimako Tada.[14] This same book also won the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets in 2011.[15] His book of translations, Killing Kanoko: Selected Poems of Hiromi Itō, published in 2009 by Action Books, was a finalist in the poetry category of the Best Translated Book Award offered by Three Percent.[9] His translation of the wartime memoirs of the gay writer Mutsuo Takahashi, Twelve Views from the Distance, was shortlisted for a Lambda Literary Award (memoir category) in 2013.

Angles has also won grants from the National Endowment for the Arts[10] and the 2008 PEN Translation Fund Grant from PEN American Center for his translation of the memoirs of the contemporary poet Mutsuo Takahashi. In 2008, Angles was invited to the Kennedy Center in Washington DC to serve as the curator for the literary events in the Japan: Culture+Hyperculture Festival.[16] He has also been interviewed on NPR's All Things Considered about the short story collection Japan: A Traveler's Literary Companion, which he co-edited with J. Thomas Rimer.[12]

In 2009–2010, Angles was a visiting researcher at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, where he organized a group research project about the history of translation practices in Japan.[5] In 2011, he was a visiting professor in Comparative Literature at the Komaba campus of the University of Tokyo.

In 2017, Angles was awarded the Yomiuri Prize, a prize comparable to America's Pulitzer Prize, for Literature in poetry during a formal ceremony in Tokyo on Feb. 17. Angles won the prize for his book of Japanese-language poetry, "Watashi no hizukehenkosen" ("My International Date Line").[13] Angles is one of the few non-native speakers to win the award and is the first non-native ever to win for a book of poetry.
