Biography
[編集]Early career
[編集]In elementary school Maika found it difficult to communicate with other children and she could never really find the voice to express how she felt. During her first year in junior high school she heard the song "We Will Rock You"(Queen), performed by Keiko Lee for a Nissan commercial. Upon hearing this song, Maika became interested in music[1]. Maika was especially grabbed by the directness of lyrics in Western pop music and she decided that she, too, would want to write these kinds of lyrics to finally convey her true feelings, as she so desperately had wanted to do ever since her days in elementary school. In an interview after her first release Maika proclaimed that this had been the driving force behind her music.[2]
As a freshman in middle school Maika was given a guitar for her birthday by her parents. Playing the guitar didn’t come naturally to her and so she left the guitar on a shelf for the first year. A year later she rediscovered the guitar and decided to take lessons together with a friend[3].At that time Maika was a fan of the Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne and so the first songs that Maika learned to play and sing along to were songs by Avril Lavigne. In high school Maika prepared a few cover songs and a couple of original songs and she started to perform as a street artist in the shopping district of her hometown, Kumamoto.
In 2007 Maika took part in a singer-songwriter contest organised by Yamaha, called “Music Revolution”. She won the contest in the Kyushu area and became a finalist in the national competition. Through this competition she learned that she had a talent for singing and writing music. As soon as she graduated form high school she moved to Tokyo to pursue a career in music.
In the summer of 2008, Maika performed at the “Last Summer Fantasy 2008 (Aso no Kaze)” festival at Aspecta. A month later, in September 2008, Maika joined Sugiyama Kiyotaka's acoustic tour as the supporting act. In October 2008 RKK, a TV Station from Kumamoto, organised a music special at the “Battle Stage” at which Maika performed together with Kaname Nemoto. This was her first TV debut. [4]
Maika’s first single “Never Cry” was released in March 2009, on the same day as her graduation from high school.
First release by a major record label
[編集]- 2010
- January - the digital release of the single "Never Never Never Give Up" was selected "single of the week" by iTunes Japan in the category "Sound of 2010”. A week later TOWER RECORDS sold out all physical copies of this single.
- April 14 - release of the single “Never Cry”. This was her first song released by a major record label. A day later she first performed this song live on TV in a TV program called “DOMO”. The single “Never Cry” reached No. 14 on the Oricon Chart.
- October 20 - release of Maika's third single “Kokoro”. This song was used as the title song for the Japanese movie “Laio”. For Maika this was the first time that her music was used in a movie. Film director, Ryuichi Hiroki, personally approached Maika for this movie, telling her that he was very moved by the sound of her voice.
- 2013
- April - extermination of the contract with Yamaha
- October - start of Maika’s solo career as an unsigned artist

Maika's voice
[編集]Jeff Miyahara, who is engaged in several of Maika’s songs, says about Maika’s voice, “Her instinctive, wild, strong and impressive voice is hard to forget once you have heard it”[5]In “Nikkei Entertainment!”, the online version of “Marty Friedman’s J-POP Metal Slash”, former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman gave the following comment on Maika’s voice "She has a very wide vocal range and although she is strongest in the lower frequencies she also has a very distinctive and characteristic sound in the upper frequencies, something which is rare for a Japanese artist.”[6]。
