ナイチンゲール誓詞（Nightingale Pledge）は、現代看護の創設者であるフローレンス・ナイチンゲールの偉業を讃え、1893年アメリカ合衆国ミシガン州デトロイト市にあるハーパー病院（Harper Hospital）のファーランド看護学校 (Farrand Training School for Nurses) の校長リストラ・グレッター夫人を委員長とする委員会で作成されたものである。ただ、グレッター自身はその誓詞を「理念の背後にある動き続ける精神（the moving spirit behind the idea）」と考えていた[1] [2]。
ナイチンゲール誓詞は、米国における看護専門職の倫理および原則の表明となり、それは「有害なものには近寄らず」、「病気になっている人が困っているときにいつでもどこでも熱心に看護する」といった誓約を含んでいた。1935年の誓詞の改訂では、グレッターは「健康の使命者となる誓い」を含め「人間の福祉健康」向上に捧げる看護師の役割を広げた[1]。
米国の看護師は何十年もの間、戴帽式や卒業式においてナイチンゲール誓詞により誓いのセレモニーを行ってきた。近年では、米国の多くの学校がオリジナル版または1935年版に変更を加え、しばしば、より自立した看護職を促進するために「医師への忠誠」という表現を削除し、独自の特定の倫理基準を組み込んでいる[3]。

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to pass my life in purity and to practise my profession faithfully.
I shall abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and shall not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug.
I shall do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.
