Funassyi (costumed character)

Funassyi is one of the Japanese costumed characters. It calls itself a pear fairy appearing to this world miraculously once every 2,000 years. Originally a citizen of Funabashi city, Chiba Prefecture, created this character to attract people’s attention toward his/her own website. It now performs in events, festivals, TV programs and commercials, and so on, and then it has become tremendously popular in Japan. Funabashi city government office, however, does not admit that it is their official character.

Characteristic Generally, Japanese costumed characters, collectively known as Yuru-kyara (ゆるキャラ), move in a slow motion way, and they do not speak by themselves. On the other hand, Funassyi speaks by itself and sometimes shrieks, jumps and shows its heavy movements like headbanging. When it speaks, it usually ends its sentences with “~nassy” (～なっしー) which sounds like Japanese pear “nashi” (なし or 梨).

Profile It has no gender, thus it is neither a boy nor a girl. Its parents are ordinary pear trees. They have 274 children, and Funassyi is the fourth. Its birthday is July 4th in 138 year. It became 1875 years old last year. Its full name is "Funadius IV". It likes peaches best. It likes listening to hard rock music. Especially it likes Deep Purple, and it says it bought “Machine Head” as its first music album in its life. It often listens to Aerosmith’s songs. It also pays respect to Ozzy Osbourne.

History of activities (Outline) 2011 November - A citizen of Funabashi city creates a 2D type character. November 21 – Starts tweets on「Twitter」(@funassyi) 2012 March – Orders to make a 3D type costume based on the 2D character. April 7 – Starts uploading videos on「YouTube」site by itself. July – Visits Funabashi local government office to have it authorized and supported officially. The local office, however, rejects its offer. 2013 February 4 – Joins a press conference of publicizing an Asahi Soft Drinks Company’s TV commercial film. Funassyi shows high jumps and its heavy movements on the stage. February 5 - The TV commercial film of Asahi Soft Drinks’ blended tea drink starts to be broadcast. Funassyi appears as one of many costumed characters (Yuru-kyara) in the film. February – 11 An emcee invites Funassyi to his Nippon Television Network’s morning program, and it makes its debut on TV show. Sparks a boom of it since then. September 3 – “Funassyi London Project” is carried out. This project is that Funassyi visits London to meet Cara Delevingne, an English fashion model. A series of videos of this project are shown on 「YouTube」site. November 27 – Its first CD single「ふな ふな ふなっしー♪」(Funa Funa Funassyi♪) is released by FAR EASTERN TRIBE RECORDS.
