Overview

In 1971, ALC launched Japan's first monthly magazine for English study, which is still the main product the name of "ENGLISH JOURNAL."

In 1982, ALC released a monthly magazine-style correspondence course "1000 Hours Hearing Marathon.

The symbolic character "Chikyujin Mark," which appears on the cover of every ALC publication, became the current design in 2005. Reference books for students and books dealing with a specific specialized field of language are printed with a "Earthman Mark" which is wearing a mortar cap.

As reference books, the "Kikutan" series, which concept is users learn English words by listening, was launched in 2005 and became a bestseller with a total of over 4.5 million having been published by 2019.

As a web service, the company is known for its online English-Japanese and Japanese-English dictionary database "Eijiro," a free version is available from its website. The company also provides e-learning and class support systems to universities and other institutions.

Management Situation

In January 2011, the company posted a final loss of 350 million yen. The following year, the president and representative director were replaced for the first time since the company's founding in 1969, and the investment fund Japan Mirai Capital Corporation became a full-fledged participant in management.

On September 28, 2018, telecommunications operator FreeBit Corporation acquired all stocks, and ALC became a totally owned subsidiary of FreeBit. Accordingly, on April 28 of the same year, ALC's president was replaced and the executive structure was changed.
