I have decided to stop editing the Japanese Wikipedia due to the hostile editing environment it provides for neutral volunteer editors, including the increasing politicization and partisanship of its coverage. I now exclusively edit the English Wikipedia. Many articles on the Japanese Wikipedia have been transformed into low-quality partisan propaganda that promotes highly biased narratives and misleads the public, rather than providing high-quality, verifiable information that reflects the latest mainstream scholarship and consensus. The site is now actively harming the public’s understanding of the sciences and humanities with its low-quality material, rather than educating them with the best available scholarly knowledge and offering a solid starting point for junior researchers. Efforts to counter abuse of the platform are largely met with indifference, and little is done at the community level to systematically address the problem.

The Japanese Wikipedia suffers from a chronic shortage of talented editors. If the community is genuinely concerned about retaining qualified contributors with real expertise, it should investigate why there are almost no PhD-holding academics willing to contribute to the Japanese Wikipedia under their real names with full responsibility (unlike on the English Wikipedia), and why they largely view the Japanese Wikipedia as a nuisance that misinforms students and is unworthy of serious engagement. Improving the editing environment to value expertise and eliminate harassment by non-experts without advanced degrees—who are often driven by political agendas—is a crucial first step.
