Wanted: GCR encoding of Sharp 2.5-inch floppy drives
[編集](Sorry, I don't speak Japanese, therefore I'll use English.) For historical completeness, I tried to document all GCR encodings ever used on magnetic storage media in the en:group-coded recording article in the English Wikipedia. One of the few formats still missing is the encoding used by the special Sharp CE-1600F and CE-140F 2.5-inch "pocket disk" drives (introduced in 1986) for Sharp BASIC pocket computers (like the PC-14xx, PC-1600, PC-E500 series etc.). It is specified as "GCR (4/5)" code, but this only specifies the outer format, not the actual code value assignments used in Sharp's implementation. I guess that this is/was documented at least in Japanese magazines or forums discussing those Sharp pocket computers in the late 1980s to mid 1990s. If you own or can point to any info on this, it would be great if you could add it to the above mentioned article in the English WP (as there is no corresponding article in the Japanese WP at present) or leave a note on the talk page. Thanks a lot. --Matthiaspaul(会話) 2017年4月19日 (水) 14:41 (UTC)
- Another important question is about the Sharp CE-1650 2.5-inch pocket disk floppies used in these drives. Does someone know the coercivity (保磁力) (measured in oersted (エルステッド)) and if these floppies were specified as single-density (SD/1D) or double-density (DD/2D) media? Which Sharp pocket computers of the PC-xxxx series supported 20-digit double-precision mode?
[編集]For the article on en:Scientific_notation#Examples_and_other_notations (指数表記) in the English Wikipedia I am researching which Sharp BASIC pocket computers supported a letter "D" (example: 1.0D3) instead of a letter "E" in E-notation (example: 1.0E3) in order to indicate 20-digit double-precision (DEFDBL). So far, the list includes the Sharp PC-1280, PC-1475, PC-E500 (1988), PC-E500S (1995), PC-E550 (1990), PC-E650 (1993) and PC-U6000 (1993). However, there have been a number of variants only available in Japan:
- Sharp PC-1470U
- Sharp PC-1480U (1989)
- Sharp PC-1490U (1990)
- Sharp PC-1490UII (1991)
Unfortunately, over here in Europe I was unable to locate any reliable information on them. I would like to know if these models supported the 20-digit double precision mode as well or not. This is certainly detailed in the user manuals, and the existance of the DEFDBL BASIC command may give a hint as well. Do you know or can you point me to a source for this information? (As this Japanese list article unfortunately still contains a lot of inaccuracies and detail errors, please don't use this article as a source of information. I'm interested in reliable info.) Thanks. --Matthiaspaul(会話) 2017年6月6日 (火) 00:21 (UTC)
- According to "電言板6 PC-U6000 PROGRAM LIBRARY" and "電言板5 PC-1490UII PROGRAM LIBRARY", whith are free-gift booklet of the poket computers, double-precision BASIC has been supported since PC-1470U (1987). Incidentally, PC-1480U should not be 1989 but 1988.--Gwano(会話) 2017年7月13日 (木) 08:26 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, Gwano. I have added them to the list in the article. Who was the publisher of these booklets? Do they have ISBNs or ISSNs or something similar? Are they available online somewhere?
- Since you seem to be very knowledgeable regarding Sharp pocket computers, if you like, please have a look at en:Sharp PC-E500#Variants. Do you spot any errors (f.e. dates, rubber keys, structured BASIC, etc.)?

- The publisher is University Co-operative. The development history of pocket computers related to the Univ. Co-op. (early PC-14xx series and U series), is written in page 2.
- I can't find their online version.
- Perhaps, ISBN or ISSN may not be assigned.
- Sometimes PC-U6000 or PC-1490UII is exhibited in auctions, so the booklets may be obtained with the poket computers.--Gwano(会話) 2017年7月19日 (水) 11:19 (UTC)
