The mansion was designed by Wee Moh Teck and constructed in 1909 by Tan Boo Liat, a great-grandson of the philanthropist Tan Tock Seng. Tan Boo Liat named it Golden Bell Mansion after his grandfather Tan Kim Ching (

" means "golden bell"). As Tan Boo Liat was president of the Singapore branch of the Kuomintang, he invited Dr. Sun Yat-Sen to stay in the house briefly in 1911. The house was sold in 1934 following Tan's death.
